Do Pimple Patches Actually Work?

A Licensed Esthetician Explains When to Use Them (and When to Skip Them)

Pimple patches have become one of the most popular skincare products on the market, and when they're used correctly, they can be incredibly effective. They help absorb excess oil, protect blemishes from picking, and speed up the healing process for certain types of acne.

The key phrase? Certain types.

One of the biggest skincare misconceptions we see is people using pimple patches on every breakout. The truth is, not every pimple should be covered with a patch.

Our licensed esthetician, Natalie, is breaking down exactly when to reach for a pimple patch—and when to leave it in the drawer.

The Best Pimples for a Pimple Patch

Hydrocolloid pimple patches work best on blemishes that are:

  • Close to the surface of the skin

  • Already showing a visible whitehead

  • Mildly inflamed

  • Ready to drain naturally

Hydrocolloid material works by absorbing excess oil, fluid, and impurities already present near the surface while protecting the area from bacteria and picking.

Natalie's Tip: If your breakout already has a whitehead and is close to the surface, this is exactly when she reaches for her favorite pimple patches.

When You Should Skip the Pimple Patch

If your breakout is:

  • Deep beneath the skin

  • Red, swollen, or painful

  • A cystic or hormonal blemish

  • Tender to the touch without a visible whitehead

...skip the patch.

While it seems like a pimple patch would help "pull everything out," it actually works differently.

Because hydrocolloid patches absorb moisture from the surface of the skin, they can dry out the upper layers before the deeper inflammation has a chance to resolve. This can make it harder for trapped congestion to naturally work its way out and may prevent your acne-fighting products from penetrating as effectively.

What Should You Do Instead?

For deep, painful breakouts, Natalie recommends keeping it simple.

Ice the breakout for a few minutes to calm inflammation.

Keep your skin hydrated.

Focus on supporting your skin barrier with gentle skincare.

Healthy, hydrated skin heals better. When your skin barrier is functioning properly, it helps reduce inflammation and creates an environment that's less favorable for acne-causing bacteria.
